Travis Barker & DJ AM expected to make full recoveries;
Game, family and friends issue statements
As we reported yesterday, drummer Travis Barker, 32, and DJ AM, 35, were the sole survivors in a plane crash in South Carolina that claimed the lives of four others, including Barker's assistant Chris Baker. Miraculously, Travis Barker and DJ AM are not only expected to survive but doctors are predicting they will make full recoveries from their injuries following yesterdays deadly plane crash.
Officials at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Ga., including the center's medical director, Dr. Fred Mullins, said the men suffered second- and third-degree burns but had no other serious injuries from the crash.
"Dr. Mullins also stated this morning that he expects a full recovery for these two patients," said Beth Frits, spokeswoman for the burn center. "We've got walking miracles when you look at the plane crash." "Anybody who can survive a plane crash is pretty lucky," Mullins told reporters. Mullins said Barker was burned primarily on his torso and lower body, while DJ AM, was burned on his arms and a portion of his head and they are both currently in critical but stable condition and "are not getting any worse." He said both men are being treated for second- and third-degree burns and recovery could require a year, but Mullins noted, "I would expect it would be much sooner than that."
It seems what saved them was their quick reaction time. According to an eyewitness both men jumped from the burning airplane and ran from the crash site as they patted each other down to extinguish the flames.
Family members for Barker and Goldstein released a joint statement:
"Both Travis Barker and Adam Goldstein (DJ AM) are currently being treated for second and third degree burns. Barker suffered from burns on his torso and lower body and Goldstein suffered from burns on his arm and a portion of his head," according to the statement. "Since both Barker and Goldstein are in overall good health and didn't suffer from any other crash-related complications, a full recovery is expected."
A friend of Travis Barker and DJ AM told E! News:
DJ AM is "really, really badly burned," according to the source, who confirms that "his face is very burned." The source adds, "More than 50 percent of his body is burned and the worst is on his face." He was being "kept in an incubator" as part of his treatment in order to maintain a sterile environment and prevent infections. The friend also said that Barker was burned "mostly from the waist down."
The Game said:
"I am deeply hurt by this tragedy. Travis Barker has always been there for me when I needed him creatively. We've done many songs together. Just recently he appeared in my video (Dope Boyz) that he featured on. I respect and love him, my prayers are with him and his family in this difficult time for his speedy & complete recovery."
Beanie Sigel:
"I was just with Travis and the whole squad in Vegas," he said. "Man, that [news of the tragedy] took me like, 'Wow.' It's just a blessing he survived. It got me thinking, like, 'Is it all worth it?' This lifestyle and all the traveling we do.
It was cool working with [Barker]," Sig added. "We didn't sit in the studio together, but I laid [down] my vocals and sent it to him. He called back and said he loved the record. He said he wanted to do the music over and make the record we did have an even bigger sound."
Paul Wall:
"It's so shocking and unexpected, Travis and AM are such generous people. They would literally give you the shirt off their back. And Lil Chris was such a great friend. He was down for life. I feel so bad for his wife and son that are going through such a hard time right now. Family is something very important to Travis and Chris, we all gotta pull together right now."
Lindsay Lohan:
"please send your prayers out to adam goldstein and travis barker -- along with the others lost in the plane crash ... it's so scary to think that life can end so fast ... we must all treasure each and every moment -- and be thankful for what we have. all my love ... xoxo L."
DJ Samantha Ronson:
"my good friend adam (dj am) was in a plane crash last night, he was lucky to survive but is still in the hospital being treated for burns (so i read). i don't really know what to say, it's such horrifying news, but i was hoping you guys would please send him your best wishes/ prayers because I don't really know what else to do. also for travis barker, who was on the plane. four other people were on the plane and did not survive, i can't even imagine the pain their families must be in. soooooo sad and i'm so sorry. take good care of yourselves, samantha xo."
Fallout Boy:
"Our band would like to reach out and put those who were a part of this tragedy and their families in our prayers, and as well our continued support for the recovery of those who survived," the statement reads. "It's times like these that we are reminded -- in the worst possible way -- to honor life. Chris [Baker] was a rad guy. He always had a way to get us to smile on tour, no matter what situation we were in, and he was truly beloved."
Jamie Kennedy:
"You know, it's crazy because I've been trying to call Travis because he was on my show Blowin’ Up and I've known him for a long time. And I just hope to God—and I pray—that they're okay and they get through it…My heart goes out to the four victims' family for sure, and I do hope that DJ and Travis do pull through. And they are gonna pull through."
David Spade:
"Sometimes you wind up in those little planes, and there's always a point where you feel like something might go wrong…It just scares me, I feel for them, and it makes me rethink everything…Everyday that you live is a good one. I hope they'll pull out of it all right. I think everyone's pulling for them."
Kathy Griffin:
"That is a terrifying, terrifying experience to go through, and thank God two of the guys survived, but, oh man. It's a scary, scary thing for everyone to go through."
Lauren Conrad:
"My prayers are with them. It's so scary…I just think it's a wake-up call. A lot of people take those planes, and you kind of get comfortable and you kind of forget, but it's really scary."
Tim Kash (MTV):
"It was only a few days ago that I saw DJ AM, he was in New York just last week to DJ at my favorite NY nightclub, 1OAK. That night, 1OAK was extra-extra packed by the time I walked in - a testament to the popularity and huge fanbase of DJ AM, who was the special guest DJ of the night. As soon as I walked in, AM, who was talking to his close friend and acclaimed hip-hop producer the Alchemist, saw me and said hi, and immediately joked warmly... That night he played one of the best sets I’d heard in a long time.
Travis really is one of the nicest people I’ve had the pleasure to meet. I have the utmost respect for this man, and I promise that I am not just saying this for effect or because of what has happened. I really mean it. Travis and DJ AM, get well soon"
Gail Moakler, Barker's former mother-in-law:
Described her daughter and Barker's ex-wife as "totally crushed," adding that, "Our heart pours out. We're hoping he recovers. The family is rallying around him and saying our prayers." "There's still love between them," she said. "She spends a lot of time with him. Their priorities are their kids. We're waiting a bit to see what God brings. Shanna spoke to Travis last night. He was defiant after the accident and didn't want to be lifted in a helicopter, but rather an ambulance, so they had to knock him out." According to reports his ex-wife has flown out there to be by his side.
DJ AM's sister, Lara, and her husband, Benjamin Long:
"We're in shock," Benjamin Long said. "Nobody expects something like this. We're waiting to hear more."
AM's former fiancee, Nicole Richie:
"is in shock," UsMagazine.com reported on Saturday, citing an unidentified "pal" of RIchie's. "She wishes only the best for Adam and hopes he recovers from this... She's horribly upset about the people who died." The friend added that Richie's current beau, Good Charlotte's Joel Madden, "knows Travis and also feels terrible and hopes they recover. This is terrible news for both of them."
According to a TMZ report yesterday, they were on the private jet as opposed to a commercial airliner because the wife of Barker's business partner Chris Baker was about to give birth. That information has since been disputed. A rep for DJ AM released the following statement Saturday evening, "Chris Baker did not ask for a jet to meet his wife in delivery because she's not even pregnant. A private jet had always been chartered as DJ AM had a private engagement today in Los Angeles."
