Mixing Hip Hop and Politics

Win or lose, this election will undoubtedly go down in history.  We have an African American as a candidate of a major party, a woman running for VP in the Republican party and, most importantly, this will mark the first time that Hip Hop has stood up in unison behind a particular candidate.

For the first time in Hip Hop's history we have found a candidate that appeals to us and we can support.  2008 will be the year Hip Hop got political and that is an amazing feat.  To see Hip Hop unify for anything is monumental and the fact that artists are standing up and telling the younger generation to register and vote is influencing a whole new generation.  No longer are rappers saying "your vote doesn't count" or "I don't vote cause it won't change anything," now the resounding theme is "get out and vote, be heard" and that alone will change the face and power structure of this nation.

Hip Hop was always a voice of the people, a way for us to be heard, and it's incredible to see it once again using the power of the mic to spread a message to its people, instead of the usual money, clothes and hoes theme.  For a long time Hip Hop seemed to be promoting ignorance but finally it seems cool to be informed and to be part of the process.  Somewhere there's a kid listening to Nas and Young Jeezy and saying to himself I too can be can be President of the United States someday.

I see all these Hip Hop artists squashing beefs and I personally belief that is somehow related to Obama's inspirational messages of hope and unity.  We may be finally getting it together as a people.

"UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL!"

In the video below several artists are asked how they feel about Hip Hop mixing music and politics.
