Dame Dash loses sneaker deal but more importantly is Pro Keds dissing Hip Hop?

When it rains it pours and it seems it's pouring on Dame Dash right now.  Just last week we reported that his Manhattan homes are in danger of going into foreclosure and now he's losing his licensing agreement with PRO Keds.  The company has cited that it plans to head into a new direction and apparently Dame Dash and Hip Hop doesn't fit its strategic plans.  The company has announced that it will focus on "being a classic American brand, less Hip Hop, more for the trendsetter."

In a press release on Monday (8/25), The Stride Rite Corp. announced that it has reacquired its rights to the PRO-Keds brand from licensee and hip-hop mogul Damon Dash and will bring the brand back in-house.

Stride Rite spokeswoman Debra Fernandes insisted that Dame Dash's financial woes had nothing to do with the decision to re-acquire the licensing agreement from Dash.  She said,"It was just a matter of timing, we just wanted a new direction."

"We thank Damon for his partnership and efforts on the Pro-Keds brand over the past few years, and we look forward to relaunching the brand under the Stride Rite organization to maximize the brand's full potential," said Gregg Ribatt, president and CEO at Stride Rite. He added “In the recent past, the brand has lacked focus and lacked patience.  As a result, [Pro-Keds] has pursued things like co-branding [with Rocawear]. That lack of strategic approach hasn’t enabled the brand to fulfill its potential. [Now] we’re very focused on controlling distribution and trying to grow the business the right way for the long term.  We’re more focused on being a classic American brand, less hip-hip, more for the trendsetter,” he said.

So PRO Keds wants to be more "American" and feels Hip Hop fans are not trendsetters?

Good luck selling your sneakers without us Mr. Ribatt.

U411 Note:  We need to stop talking this Hip Hop is dead nonsense!  They're starting to believe us.
